Hardscaping refers to the more structural elements of a landscape installation, and typically includes things like retaining walls, patios, pathways, edging, water features, planters & pergolas.

A retaining wall is a specially designed structure that holds soil on one side and is free standing on the other. They can be constructed of wood (usually pressure-treated timbers or cedar) or specially-made concrete blocks. They help to accommodate changes in grade in a landscape with uneven topography. A well-designed retaining wall can elevate planting areas for improved drainage while at the same time providing a seatwall. There is no end to the benefits of these heavy barriers, but they must be properly constructed to prevent failure.

Our retaining walls are carefully constructed according to the highest industry standards in order to provide a long-lasting, trouble free structure that will increase your property value as well as enhance the functionality of your landscape.

As well as being a useful addition to your outdoor living space, paver patios and pathways can add visual interest through the many colors, styles, and materials available. While concrete can heave and crack over time, paver patios will remain flat and accommodate the natural movement of the ground that occurs through our changing seasons.

Paver patios and pathways are only as good as the crews who install them, and at MCG we pride ourselves on professional installation following strict guidelines. All of our paver installations are swept in with polymeric sand guaranteed to give you the best possible fit and finish on your new paver pathway or patio.

A raised bed is simply any planting surface above ground level. They can be as simple or elaborate as you want to make them. Material choice depends on the look you desire and on your budget. Wood is most commonly used. For longer life,pressure-treated wood or naturally decay-resistant wood such as cedar are normally used. Concrete blocks are more expensive than wood but will last longer when properly constructed.

Using landscape edging accentuates each garden area and defines the shape and form of the overall design.Planting your garden with a clear edge gives it definition and structure, rather than having it appear to be floating in your lawn.

Landscape edging also corrals pathways made of loose material, such as gravel or mulch; it maintains clearly defined walkways while keeping the path materials in place. It prevents soil and mulch from spilling onto your lawn, and at the same time prevents your grass from growing into your garden beds.

Lawns & gardens can be edged with a number of types of hardscaping materials, some better than others in terms of quality of finish and durability. At MCG we only use contractor-grade edging materials and install them properly and professionally to ensure that they won’t shift or become dislodged over time. We do it right, so you only have to do it once!

A water feature can be as simple as a burbler or as elaborate as a waterfall cascading into a fish pond with a fountain. Plants can be incorporated –both in and around the pond –adding beauty and, in naturalistic ponds, a rich habitat for wildlife.

However, a large garden is not required, as there are many features available nowadays to enliven even the smallest spaces. Pondless waterfalls are a great innovation that provide the look and sound of a traditional pond, where a traditional pond installation might be impractical.

Water features can be adapted to fit all landscape styles –from traditional to ultra-modern –and enhance the elegance of any garden. The soothing sound of burbling or gently trickling water also adds an element of soothing, Zen tranquility to your garden retreat. In addition, the sound of running water is often used to mask undesirable background noise, such as traffic.

Types of water features include pondless waterfalls, reflecting pools, water gardens and fish ponds.

Why enjoy your landscape only during the day? Installing an exterior landscape lighting system is a great way to add beauty, curb appeal, functionality and safety to your home garden, walkway and entrance areas. Nowadays there are many options for enhancing your home and garden with low-voltage landscape lights, from up-lighting trees or fountains, to spotlighting landscape features, floodlighting garden areas, lighting pathways, and much more!

Landscape lighting can easily be applied to existing as well as to new landscapes, as it is usually the last element to go in –truly the icing on the cake! Moreover, LED lighting is now a great option for many lighting situations, providing a long-lasting and low-cost lighting solution.

Basically the opposite of hardscaping, softscaping refers to the organic components of a landscape, such as trees, shrubs and plants. At MCG we are proud to see gardens we have planted not only surviving, but thriving years later. We know and love our plants, and make sure every single one we select is a healthy specimen, appropriate for its intended use, and installed to the highest gardening standards.

For existing gardens, arrange a horticultural consultation to discuss problem areas and possible renovations that can rejuvenate your space.

There are two main types of irrigation systems: drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation. Drip irrigation is more water-efficient and is increasingly being used in the Okanagan both to reduce waste and minimize water costs. However, any large, flat area like a lawn will still require sprinkler irrigation. Drip irrigation systems are most effective for watering trees, shrubs, xeriscapes, baskets or pots, and other garden areas.

At MCG we are committed to working with our clients to design the irrigation system that meets your specific watering needs and budget. On most properties, a combination of drip and sprinkler irrigation will be required. Our design, build, and installation team is qualified to take good care of your specific project and ensure its efficient operation for years to come. We offer:

· Complete in-ground lawn irrigation installations   ·   Complete drip irrigation systems for garden beds, containers & hanging baskets   ·   Repairs and restorations   ·    Upgrades to existing systems   ·   Spring start-ups   ·   Winterization shut-downs
